Iconic civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton recently al sharpton smallcalled on the publicly traded company, Intuit to diversify its board and executive and management teams.

“Intuit currently has a stunning lack of diversity in its ranks,” said Reverend Sharpton. “How this continues to be accepted as the norm fifty years post segregation is a sad testament to the lack of economic opportunities for minorities,” he continued.

Intuit’s lack of diversity is particularly visible on the executive board and management team.  Currently, there is not one African American on the Intuit Executive Board or management team.

Although the Intuit website states a goal “to increase our African-American, Latino and other underrepresented ethnic minorities to make up 15 percent of our workforce by 2020,” National Action Network believes that goal can be achieved in a significantly shorter time frame by appointing African Americans to the Executive Board immediately.

“Adequate representation from the African American community on the Executive Board of Intuit will advance the discussion of diversity and inclusion throughout the company. Economic empowerment is a critical next generation civil rights issue,” said Sharpton. “We must do better.”

In a letter sent to the board and executive leadership, NAN is calling on Intuit to take steps to make immediate changes and provide equal opportunities to every citizen. If Intuit does not take steps towards inclusion, NAN is prepared to ask Congress to disallow Intuit from being able to file federal tax returns.

“If this company expects to continue to make money from our tax dollars, then we all should have a voice and be represented,” Sharpton concluded. “If they do not diversify, the United States Congress should not allow them to continue filing federal tax returns.”

NAN’s letter contained five action items for Intuit to act on in good faith.
