Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmailblacknativity2x2webA contemporary musical adaptation of Langston Hughes’ 1961 play Black Nativity will be hitting the silver screen on Nov. 27.The feature is a Fox Searchlight Pictures musical starring Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whitaker, Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett.

Black Nativity was originally written as a retelling of the classic nativity story with an all black cast and Gospel spirituals chosen by Hughes. Over the decades, the play has been performed Off-Broadway and in theaters around the nation.

The present-day film adaptation is a musical in which the main character, coincidently named Langston, goes on a journey that helps him discover the meaning of faith family.

In a contemporary adaptation of Langston Hughes’ celebrated play, the holiday musical drama BLACK NATIVITY follows Langston(Jacob Latimore), a street-wise teen from Baltimore raised by a single mother, as he journeys to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged relatives Reverend Cornell and Aretha Cobbs(Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett).

Unwilling to live by the imposing Reverend Cobbs’ rules, a frustrated Langston is determined to return home to his mother, Naima(Jennifer Hudson). Langston embarks on a surprising and inspirational journey and along with his new friends, and a little divine intervention, he discovers the true meaning of faith, healing, and family.
