Coalition Calls for Nationwide Mobilization of Black Veterans and Their Families for the Upcoming Midterm Elections
Oakland, California — The National Coalition of Black Veteran Organizations (NCBVO) proudly announces that the Virginia State Conference of the NAACP has joined the Coalition’s nationwide Veterans Voter Registration Campaign, an initiative designed to encourage Black and Brown veterans to register, participate, and vote in the upcoming Midterm Elections.
Virginia, home to more than 103,000 black veterans, represents a significant population of current and former service members whose voices and votes can help shape the future of their communities and the nation. Through this partnership, the Virginia NAACP will launch its ‘Veterans Vote’ campaign designed to support local branches in working with veteran organizations, community leaders, and civic engagement advocates to increase voter registration and voter participation among veterans and their families.
The campaign emphasizes not only registering eligible veterans to vote but also encouraging them to accompany family members, friends, and fellow veterans to the polls on Election Day. Organizers believe that veterans have long demonstrated leadership through military service and can continue that leadership through active participation in the democratic process.
“The right to vote is one of the most important freedoms our veterans have defended through their service,” said Charles Blatcher, III, chairman of the National Coalition of Black Veteran Organizations. “By joining this effort, the Virginia NAACP is helping ensure that the voices of veterans and their families are heard in communities across the Commonwealth.”
The Coalition’s national goal is to inspire a historic turnout among the nation’s estimated 2.5 million Black veterans. Outreaching to veteran organizations, civic groups and faith-based institutions, the campaign seeks to strengthen voter participation and civic engagement in every region of the country.
The National Coalition of Black Veteran Organizations is calling upon NAACP state conferences and local branches nationwide to join this important initiative by targeting veterans in voter registration drives, voter education activities, transportation assistance to polling locations, and community outreach.
“As veterans, we answered the call to serve our country,” chairman Blatcher stated. “Now we are asking veterans to answer the call to participate in our democracy. Register. Vote. Bring your family. Bring your community. Let your voice be heard.”
