The Communications Officer is responsible for disseminating NPP’s message, resources, tools and products to media, partner organizations, and constituents nation-wide through a variety of marketing channels. The Communications Officer works closely with the Director of Development and Communications to devise strategy, increase engagement with NPP, and aggressively expand NPP’s publicity at a national level, in both online and traditional media.

This communicator should be a fast thinker and writer who can seize publicity opportunities in real-time; develop pithy and concise messages; find media opportunities across all online and traditional platforms; and communicate effectively with members of the media. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and is able to quickly generate buzz using social media platforms and e-activism as well as traditional media outreach.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. In conjunction with Director of Development and Communications, draw up strategic communications plans and procedures to meet short-term and long-term goals
  2. Manage existing media relationships and establish new relationships with key media contacts, including national, regional, and online media outlets
  3. Respond to media inquiries, pitch stories, and conduct follow up via Twitter, phone, and email
  4. Maintain media database and record of contact with reporters, including developing system for measuring effectiveness
  5. Write press releases and other media kit materials
  6. Maintain NPP’s social media presence, including creating content strategy/plans, and curating engaging content for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Storify, Tumblr, and Reddit
  7. Manage and foster constituent engagement via social media
  8. Coordinate weekly e-updates, including compiling content, writing, managing e-lists and tracking results via Constant Contact
  9. Work closely with Development staff to implement creative online fundraising campaigns
  10. Utilize Google AdWords to drive traffic to NPP materials
  11. Track and report on social media and web metrics
  12. Maintain NPP library of photos, video, testimonials, and quotes for use in marketing materials
  13. Create outreach material for distribution to partner organizations and assist with outreach messages and strategy
  14. Assist with marketing oversight of NPP’s web content
  15. Assist with production of video
  16. Create other marketing collateral as required

QUALIFICATIONS
Required

  1. 3-5 years professional experience with digital marketing, social media, media relations, and/or communications
  2. Experience working with members of the media
  3. Proficiency with digital communication tools including social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Reddit, Storify) and email management tools (Constant Contact)
  4. Knowledge of web analytics, including Google Analytics, Google AdWords, and social media metrics tools such as Sprout Social
  5. Superior written and verbal communication skills
  6. Highly organized, acute attention to detail (including proofreading), able to multi-task and prioritize
  7. Pro-active problem solver and eager to take initiative
  8. Tech-savvy
  9. Creative, innovative thinker willing to experiment and able to respond to changing, fast-paced social media and media environment
  10. Visually-oriented with creative eye for effective graphics and images for social media
  11. Ability to communicate effectively with wide range of constituencies and respond to large and diverse partner base

Preferred

  1. Graphic design skills and proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite
  2. Video production experience using Adobe Premier and After Effects
  3. Background in journalism

REPORTING AND SUPERVISION
Reports to Director of Development and Communications. May supervise student interns or volunteers.

Salary for this full-time position is commensurate with the successful candidate’s professional experience.  We offer a competitive benefits package that includes health/dental insurance, retirement and generous paid time off.

LOCATION
NPP’s office is located in Northampton, MA, but we are open to considering a remote location for the right candidate. Candidates will need to be located on the east coast (i.e., Washington, D.C. to New England).
