Since 1872, Harvard Medical School has been the incubator of bold ideas—a place where extraordinary people advance education, science and health care with unrelenting passion. Whether training tomorrow’s doctors and scientists, decoding the fundamental nature of life, advancing patient care or improving health delivery systems around the world, HMS is never at rest. Allied with some of the world’s best hospitals, research institutes and part of a University synonymous with excellence, the School’s mission remains as ambitious as it is honorable:

To create and nurture a diverse community of the best people committed to leadership in alleviating human suffering caused by disease.

Many of its students, all of whom gain needblind admission based on academic merit, require scholarships and loans to attend HMS. In academic year 2011–2012, about 84% received more than $31 million in such funding from institutional, federal and private sources; nearly $15 million of this support represents institutional scholarships bestowed by the School. HMS ranks among the top five U.S. medical schools for these awards.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Development Principal and Major Gifts, the Director of Development will be responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of $7MM in gifts annually in support of the total Principal/Major Gifts goal.

Specifically, the Director will be responsible for working with the Senior Director of Development-Principal and Major Gifts on developing an annual Major/Principal Gifts operating plan. The Director will manage two high level Advisory Councils and a portfolio of 100-150 prospects that have a capacity to give $100,000+ with a concentration on donors who can make gifts in excess of $1,000,000+. Extensive travel and occasional evening work will be required as the Director will be expected to meet regularly with donors and prospects, as well as represent HMS at events, meetings, and off-site presentations.
